Effects of digital phase-conjugate light intensity on time-reversal imaging through animal tissue

Abstract: For transillumination imaging of animal tissues, we have attempted to suppress the scattering effect in a turbid medium using the time-reversal principle of phase-conjugate light. We constructed a digital phase-conjugate system to enable intensity modulation and phase modulation. Using this system, we clarified the effectiveness of the intensity information for restoration of the original light distribution through a turbid medium. By varying the scattering coefficient of the medium, we clarified the limit of … Show more

“…Focusing and imaging through scattering media are of uttermost importance in bioimaging [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] and measurements [9]. In scattering media, the extensive scattering of light is a significant obstacle for optical focusing and imaging [10].…”

“…To resolve this difficulty, we have developed a system to generate phaseconjugate light with both intensity and phase modulation for animal tissue. 25) In experiments using the developed system, we demonstrated the intensity modulation effectiveness for suppressing the scattering effect through an artificial scattering medium and animal tissue. However, in the earlier study, we did not consider effects of the absorption change in the scattering medium.…”

“…For this study, we used the experimental system developed to generate phase-conjugate light with intensity modulation and phase modulation. 25) In this system, three processes are necessary to generate phase-conjugate light. Figure 1 presents an outline of these processes.…”

“…The concept of phase conjugate mirrors has been used in a variety of applications, such as for removing imaging distortions [13][14][15][16][17] , focusing through turbid media 18,19 , reflecting seed-amplified pulses while dumping background amplified spontaneous emission [20][21][22][23][24] , and eliminating modal dispersion 25 . Phase conjugation techniques have also been implemented using film [26][27][28] and spatial light modulators [29][30][31][32][33][34] .…”
