“…In relation to stress, decreased GFAP expression has been shown to occur in the brains of stressed animals (ArayaCallís, Hiemke, Abumaria, & Flugge, 2012; Imbe, Kimura, Donishi, & Kaneoke, 2013) indicating astrocyte dysfunction. Considering that astrocytes are critical in support ing neuronal functioning, astrocyte dysfunction may lead to neuronal dysfunction, particularly in stress sensitive brain regions, leading to anxietylike and depressive behaviors (Li, Yang, Ma, & Qu, 2013;Rahati, Nozari, Eslami, Shabani, & Basiri, 2016). Because GFAP expression has been found to be an important stressrelated endpoint and indicator of astrocyte function, we wanted to determine how its expression would change in response to our social stress paradigm(s).…”

“…In a separate study, juvenile Sprague-Dawley rats from stressed pregnancies showed an increase in the basal circulating levels of CD4 + and CD8 + T lymphocytes, increased levels of cytokine IL-2, and reduced levels of cytokine IL-1β when housed in short-term enriched conditions at an early age (Laviola et al, 2004). EE for rodents in large cages with toys and other accessories has shown beneficial effects on brain glial cell morphology and numbers in models of several neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders such as AD (Beauquis et al, 2013), schizophrenia (Rahati et al, 2016) and depression (Laviola et al, 2008). While abnormalities in brain glial cell morphology and functioning are the established etiologies of these psychiatric disorders (Cotter et al, 2001;Nagele et al, 2004), the effects of different EE protocols and inclusion or exclusion of EE objects on glial cells may differ in different brain regions.…”

“…GFAP is one of the main immunocytochemical markers of astrocytes, the most important representative of microglia in the CNS of mammals [3,4]. Protein S-100 is a specific protein for the cells of the astrocytic glory of the CNS, and the NSE is an intracellular cytoplasmic enzyme of the neurons that catalyzes the transformation of 2-phosphoglycerate to 2-phosphoenolpyruvate [5]. It is widely used for diagnostic purposes and in experimental works in the study of the functions of the nervous system in norm and in pathology as a marker of astrocytes [5,6].…”

“…Cerebrospinal fluid MBP levels increase in acute demyelination [8,9]. Thus, the diagnostic and prognostic value of increasing of NSE, the MBP, GFAP, BDNF, S-100 protein levels in stroke, craniocerebral trauma, and CNS defects in newborns has been proven [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. During viral neuroinfections, damage to the cells of the brain occurs, and determining of the levels of neuro-specific markers may have a diagnostic value.…”
