Effects of Ethanol Extracts from Grateloupia elliptica, a Red Seaweed, and Its Chlorophyll Derivative on 3T3-L1 Adipocytes: Suppression of Lipid Accumulation through Downregulation of Adipogenic Protein Expression

Abstract: Grateloupia elliptica (G. elliptica) is a red seaweed with antioxidant, antidiabetic, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and anticoagulant activities. However, the anti-obesity activity of G. elliptica has not been fully investigated. Therefore, the effect of G. elliptica ethanol extract on the suppression of intracellular lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells by Oil Red O staining (ORO) was evaluated. Among the eight red seaweeds tested, G. elliptica 60% ethanol extract (GEE) exhibited the highest inhibition of lipi… Show more

“…For example, CTEN and GPAR have radical-scavenging activities ( 22 , 23 ). Kim et al ( 24 ) and Lee et al ( 25 ) reported that the bromophenols contained in GELL have antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory effects. AANC contains many secondary metabolites, including tannins, which can have antimicrobial and pharmacological activities ( 26 ).…”

“…In the search for bioactive compounds for sustainable use of Grateloupia spp., some studies have reported the evaluation of bioactivities of organic solvent extracts of G. turuturu (also reported in the literature as G. doryphora ) and species in the same genus, such as G. filicina , G. elliptica , G. imbricata and G. lanceola [ 7 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 ]. Methanol, acetone, ethyl acetate and chloroform extracts from G. filicina have shown good antioxidants properties as scavengers of reactive oxygen species [ 35 ] and capacities of reducing lipid peroxidation in oils and DNA damage in rat lymphocytes [ 36 ].…”

“…Chlorophyll is the pigment present in plant parts that has been proved to have medicinal properties. The chlorophyll derivatives influence the metabolism of lipids in a positive manner, which can be further used in the management of obesity [ 13 ]. C. sativum leaves have been shown to have the highest concentrations of about 14 µg/mL and the lowest of about 9.5 µg/mL of chlorophyll [ 14 ].…”
