Effects of Lead in white shrimp (Litopenaeus schmitti) metabolism regarding salinity

Abstract: Penaeid shrimps are important resources for worldwide fisheries and aquaculture. In Brazil, Litopenaeus schmitti is an important commercially exploited species, and the ideal animal for studying the impairment caused by the effects of heavy metals often detected in coastal areas. The main purpose of the present study was to detect the acute toxicity of lead (Pb) in L. schmitti and to investigate its effect on oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion for different salinities. This has not been studied in this s… Show more

“…Evaluation of oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion has been used, for example, to study the toxic effects caused by aromatic compounds (Lemaire, Sturve, Forlin & Livingstone ), heavy metals (Wu & Chen ; Barbieri ; Doi, Collaço, Sturaro & Barbieri ), detergents (Christiansen, Brozek & Hansen ; Barbieri ), variety of toxicants (Boudou & Ribeyre ; Barbieri & Doi ; Damato & Barbieri ) and ammonia excretion of nitrite on penaeid shrimp (Chen, Nan & Kuo ; Chen & Lai ; Chen & Nan ,b; Santos, Barbieri, Bondioli & Melo ). The purpose of the present study is to estimate nitrite toxicity, oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion at salinity levels of 5‰, 20‰ and 35‰, in white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti juveniles.…”

“…The wide geographic distribution of populations of the white shrimp, Penaeus schmitti Burkenroad, 1936 along the Atlantic coast of the Americas (FAO, 2016), is only one of the many reasons justifying the interest (Barbieri, 2010;Girotto, 2010;Barbieri et al, 2016a), the effects of pollution (Santos et al, 2014), and the economic feasibility of production (Castilho-Barros, 2013).…”

“…Aquaculture and fisheries are important activities in the production of food, employment and income for several people (Santos et al, 2014;Lustosa-Neto et al, 2018). Among consumed fish species, tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) has a great potential in the economic activity (Lago et al, 2016) being marketed as whole fish, fresh cuts, or frozen fillets, however, consumers show a preference in the consumption of fillets (Oliveira Filho et al, 2012).…”
