Effects of liquid crystallinity on anticancer activity of benzoate derivatives possessing a terminal hydroxyl group

Abstract: To elucidate the effects of liquid crystallinity on the anticancer activity of a small mesogenic molecule, we prepared some benzoate derivatives possessing a terminal hydroxyl group and investigated their antiproliferative activity against A549 human lung cancer cells. We also observed their molecular aggregation properties using polarised optical microscopy, differential scanning microscopy and dynamic light scattering. We discuss the structure-property relation of the benzoate derivatives. The results are ex… Show more

“…It is worth mentioning that the obtained high crystallinity of EPSR4 compared to exopolysaccharides extracted from other resources could be attributed to the high molecular weight of EPSR4 [42,46]. Furthermore, the high degree of crystallinity could be associated with the declared anti-inflammatory and anticancer activity of the EPSR4 [47,48]. The high crystallinity of EPSR4 enhances the interaction between the cancer nucleus and EPSR4 molecules besides affecting the permeability via the cell membrane [48].…”

The high crystallinity of EPSR4 enhances the interaction between the cancer nucleus and EPSR4 molecules besides affecting the permeability via the cell membrane [48]. To further explore the morphological features of the EPSR4, we performed a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.…”
