Effects of Nitrogen Forms and Application Rates on Nitrogen Uptake, Photosynthetic Characteristics and Yield of Double-Cropping Rice in South China

Abstract: Nitrogen is an important element that affects the growth and yield of rice obviously. To explore the effects of nitrogen (N) on the growth of double-cropping rice, four consecutive trials were conducted in South China Agricultural University. Four N forms and five N application rates were set up. Rice N uptake, leaf anatomic structure, leaf fluorescence parameters and yield were studied. The results showed that rice leaf SPAD value and N content with urea treatment were the highest among 4 N forms at the headi… Show more

“…There are reports indicating that ammonium-N tends to be more readily retained when the paddy field is supplemented with CF [47,48]. Such an irrigation regime greatly facilitates the efficient and rapid uptake of nitrogen by the rice roots, which, traditionally, is highly advantageous for rice growth and development, such as more tiller numbers and higher total LAI [49,50]. In contrast, these parameters were all decreased in the AWMD regime (Figures 3 and 4).…”

“…Among the chlorophyll fluorescence traits, F v /F m , ΦPSII, ETR, and qP showed an increasing trend, while qN decreased as the N rate increased as reported in hybrid rice ( Peng et al., 2021 ). The application of the appropriate amount of N could increase the solar energy conversion efficiency in the PSII reaction center of rice leaves by improving the electron transfer efficiency and enhancing electron flow ( Zhang et al., 2017 ; Fu et al., 2021 ). Among the total traits of the study, in comparison with N100, most of the chlorophyll fluorescence traits (F v /F m , ΦPSII, ETR, and qP) and C i among the gas exchange traits were significantly correlated with grain yield at N50.…”

“…Nitrogen is important for photosynthesis and, therefore, it plays a significant role in crop or fruit yield [2,3]. In order to achieve higher economic returns, farmers often apply larger amounts of nitrogen fertilizer [4,5]. Urea is a widely used nitrogen fertilizer in agricultural production.…”
