Effects of the COVID-19 Lockdown on Body Composition and Bioelectrical Phase Angle in Serie A Soccer Players: A Comparison of Two Consecutive Seasons

Abstract: The present study compared changes in body composition during the COVID-19-associated lockdown with the same period of the following season in elite soccer players. Fifteen elite male soccer players (30.5 ± 3.6 years.) underwent a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) before (end of February) and after (end of May) the lockdown, which occurred during the 2019/2020 season, and at the same period during the following competitive season in 2020/2021, when restrictions were lifted. Fat and muscle mass were estima… Show more

“…Similar results have been reported in professional athletes who had to suspend their regular training season due to confinement [ 22 ]. However, in another study conducted with soccer players, the study of body composition did report an increase in FM% during the lockdown period; however, in this study, fat mass was studied by skinfolds and not by electrical bioimpedance, which could explain the difference in the results [ 23 ].…”

“…Even though the present sample size was in line with previous studies in team sport athletes [ 48 , 49 ], its small size limits the interpretation of the results as well as their generalization. Further studies with a larger sample are warranted.…”

“…The electrical conduction in the body is related to the water and electrolyte distribution [ 8 ]. Besides the raw bioelectrical parameters, PhA has been suggested to be a biomarker of cellular health and cell-membrane integrity [ 9 ] and descriptive of the intracellular/extracellular water ratio [ 10 , 11 ]. Thanks to these features, BIA-based assessment of PhA has been widely used among both the general population and athletes [ 12 ] in recent years.…”
