Effects of Urban Sprawl and Vehicle Miles Traveled on Traffic Fatalities

Abstract: Enhancing traffic safety can be achieved by impeding urban sprawl and encouraging compact development. On the other hand, policy tools reducing VMT may be less effective than anticipated for traffic safety.

“…Accordingly, the negative correlation between build-density and gasoline VMT (R=-0.955) confirms the decrease of VMT an increase in builddensity. The study finding is parallel with the work of other scholars (Glaeser and Kahn, 2004;Jackson, 1985;Mandal and Byrd, 2017;Nechyba and Walsh, 2004;Osborn, 1965;Yeo et al, 2015), which is proved the role of auto-dependency on the urban sprawl. Likewise, increasing the auto-dependency resulted in future consequences such as increasing CO2 emissions, fuel consumption, VMT, traffic congestion, and automobile crash.…”

“…Besides, increasing the VMT stands for increasing fuel consumption (Salon et al, 2012). Likewise, increasing the amount of VMT results in the automobile-crash, which is associated with traffic injuries and fatalities too (Ewing et al, 2014;Salon et al, 2012;Yeo et al, 2015). Accordingly, the comparison between these factors and the estimated VMT could be proved the process accuracy.…”

“…The main reasons for traffic congestion according to the literature include the poor design or operation of urban systems related to transport networks (Ligmann-Zielinska & Jankowski 2010; Klarl 2015), inadequate or poor planning policies (Harvey & Clark 1965), failure to enforce planning strategies, physical constraints (hills, rivers), disparities in per capita income, living and property costs and housing affordability (Glaeser & Kahn 2004;Bhatta 2010). Urban expansion also tends to increase car dependency and traffic congestions (Seliske et al 2012;Yeo et al 2015). Ideally, urban growth should be accompanied by a proportional expansion of the major transportation axes (Yang & Lo 2003;Kim et al 2014).…”
