Effects of Vanadium Pentoxide on the Histological and Sperm Parameters of Male Guinea Pigs

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The pharmacological effects of intraperitoneal administration of different doses of vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) on the histological and sperm parameters of male guinea pigs were investigated. Also investigated were the effects of oral pretreatment with different doses of vitamin E (a known protein kinase C inhibitor) on the V 2 O 5 -induced responses of the testis and liver of male guinea pigs. In n = 5 experiments, vanadium pentoxide in the dose range of 4.5-12.5mg/kg caused destruction of the test… Show more

“…The histopathological damage of the liver also confirms the hepatotoxic levels of cadmium chloride with an increase in urea, creatinine, acid and prostatic acid levels. This is consistent with the earlier works of Goering et al 1994;Habeebu et al 1998;Stoh et al 2000;Massanyi et al 2007;Uche et al 2008). Furthermore, these generalized toxic indices (Friberg 1986) also positively correlated with the damage caused to the testicular tissue.…”

“…Also vanadate caused a dose-and timedependent inhibition of the serum hormonal levels and these results were consistent with previous reports on the effects of vanadate on the animal studies (Uche & Obianime 2008). These results were not qualitative neither were they correlated to histopathological stimulation of various phosphatases, which are indices of general toxicity and an increase which is an index of toxicity of the prostate and testicular tissues (Eyo 2003, Hirano et al 1990, Stohs et al 2001, Shimizu & Morita.…”

“…Furthermore, it also caused hormonal depressions/inhibitions which were positively correlated to the histological damages to uterus, ovaries and oviduct, showing that the histological destruction resulted in the pathophysiological decreases in hormonal production and function which may lead to infertility (Gupta et al 2004, Uche & Obianime 2008and Lafuente 2000. This aspect of positive correlation between structure and function is novel as no other studies had ever undertaken such.…”

“…It is genotoxic, 79 and causes destruction of the testicular and liver architecture in male guinea pigs, and has been reported to be a developmental toxicant in mice. 80 To our knowledge, there is no specific data on the 2D (exfoliated) forms of V 2 O 5 .…”
