Effects of vitamin D on bone density in healthy children: A systematic review

Abstract: Skeletal growth and bone health are very important in children. The effective role of vitamin D in bone mineral density has been observed in children and adolescents. This systematic review study evaluated the effects of vitamin D on bone density in healthy children with the help of valid databases and the website of clinical trials. The results of experimental, clinical, retrospective, prospective, double-blind, and randomized studies were used. Articles that appropriately covered the topic and had the proper… Show more

“…On the comparison of vitamin D status with the duration of the reossification stage, there was a slightly longer duration noted in a re-ossification stage in the vitamin Ddeficient group (18.6±1.0) compared to the vitamin D-insufficient (17.4±1.6) and vitamin D-sufficient groups (15.4±2.1) (p<0.01); similar results were shown by Al-Naser et al [12] in their study. Vitamin D has a beneficial effect on bone health; it has been found to increase bone mineral density, as seen in previously conducted studies by Karimian et al [15] and Laird et al [16]. It also reduces the impact of pro-inflammatory cytokines on the bone [14].…”

“…During the course of bone formation the rate at which peak bone mass is built, is an important determinant of bone health in the life stages following childhood. At the same time, it is crucial to recognize the importance of vitamin D levels from the prenatal period to adolescence [ 45 , 46 ]. Two meta-analyses [ 11 , 46 ] examining the relationship of dairy consumption to BMD or BMC in children and adolescents demonstrated the significance of the beneficial effects of dairy products on bone parameters in children.…”

“…The ideal management of OI depends on the early diagnosis of the pathology and must include a multidisciplinary approach with drugs, orthopedic monitoring, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social workers and nutritionists. Added to this is the addition of adequate vitamin D intake to continue OI therapy (Gnoli et al, 2023) (Reichrath et al, 2022) (Karimian et al, 2022) The current main goals of OI therapy are considered to be fracture reduction and improvement in mobility and function.…”
