Effects of walnut shells on friction and wear performance of eco-friendly brake friction composites

Abstract: The paper addresses utilization of 0-14.6 vol.% alkaline-treated walnut shell powders (WSPs) as a functional filler in the proposed eco-friendly brake friction materials. Five non-asbestos friction material samples containing WSP and jute fibers from biomass as biodegradable components were prepared, also including several from natural resources, such as wollastonite, basalt fibers, zircon, barite, and vermiculite. The friction-wear properties of the prepared composites were tested by using Chase friction perf… Show more

“…This is a decision-making tool which is helpful to arrive at a clear idea about the performance. This procedure uses weighed average-dependent degree, which is defined as the friction stability of the composites that can be used to compare the quality and to rank them accordingly [19]. It is assumed that there is an interval X=<a, b> and a point M ∈ X, the dependent function of any point x ∈ (-∞, +∞), for the interval between X and 'M' point is expressed as given below in Eq.…”

“…As a type of environmentally-friendly material, natural-fiber-reinforced resin matrix composites have become new materials in the twenty-first century [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Natural fiber has a high specific strength and specific modulus, which makes the new, reinforced resin-based brake material have biodegradability, small pair damage, and good wear resistance at low temperatures [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. In the study of natural plant fiber/resin composites, the strengthening effect of the components on the matrix depends on the fiber structure and the interface between fiber and resin.…”
