Effects on the radiation characteristics of using a corrugated reflector with a helical antenna and an electromagnetic band-gap reflector with a spiral antenna

Abstract: Abstract-An axial-mode helical antenna backed by a perfect electric conductor (PEC reflector) is optimized to radiate a circularly polarized (CP) wave, using the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTDM). After the optimization, the PEC reflector is replaced with a corrugated reflector. The effects of the corrugated reflector on the current distribution along the helical arm and the radiation pattern are investigated. A reduction in the backward radiation is attributed to the reduction in the current flowin… Show more

“…Therefore, we would expect that, at frequencies near the frequency that satisfies , the antenna characteristics do not deteriorate when the antenna height is reduced. So far, this expectation has been confirmed for thin wire antennas backed by an EBG reflector, such as dipole, curl, and small Archimedean spiral antennas [14], [15].…”

“…A monopole curl antenna [1] and a square spiral antenna above a mushroom-like EBG surface [3] have been studied for circular polarization. A single loop wire antenna with rhombic configuration has been first proposed in [4].…”

“…The EBG reflector has been used as the ground plane of the wire antenna to achieve the low profile design [6], [7]. However, for the slot antenna with the tilted beam, such as the switched-beam slot antenna, it is not clear whether the utilization of the EBG reflector yields the low profile antenna.…”
