Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yield is a function of many factors including genetic attributes of the cultivar, environmental conditions, and management practices. Temporally variable weather patterns in North America, especially in the northern Great Plains, have resulted in the re‐examination of how spring production practices interact with the environmental conditions to influence yield. This study evaluated the impact of four plantings dates, four seeding rates, and two soybean maturity groups (MGs) using treated and untreated (control) seed on soybean growth, seed yield, and composition. The study was conducted at Volga, SD, in 2014, 2015, and 2016. The planting dates in the study ranged from early May to early July and the four seeding rates were 247,000; 333,500; 420,000; 506,500 seeds ha−1. Stand establishment decreased as seeding rate increased irrespective of planting date. The number of growing degree days (GDDs) to R1 decreased with delayed planting. Delayed planting also decreased the number of GDDs to R8, the length of the reproductive phase (R1−R8), and seed yield. Delayed planting decreased seed yield for both MGs but the rate of decrease was greater for MG 2.4 than MG 1.4. Seed treatment increased seed yield irrespective of planting date. Seed protein was variable among planting dates and between MGs while seed oil decreased with delayed planting. The research documents the impact of delayed planting on soybean yield and quality and highlights the importance of early planting in soybean irrespective of maturity group and growth habit.

Western Canada grows more than 25% of Canadian soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and is the new northern extent of the North American soybean-growing region. Canada is the seventh largest soybean-exporting country, yet little information on yield and quality in modern cultivars exists for that region. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of delayed seeding on soybean seed yield, yield components, maturity, and seed quality in Manitoba, located in the eastern northern Great Plains, and provide the first characterization of the relative influence of environment, seeding date and cultivar on those variables. Field studies were conducted from 2015 to 2017 at three locations in southern Manitoba to evaluate the performance of three soybean cultivars at three seeding dates from 24 May to 24 June. Up to 90% of total variation in the response variables was explained by environment, seeding date, cultivar and their interactions, with environment often consuming the majority of total sums of squares. Among environments, seed yield ranged from 1610 to 3590 kg ha −1 , seed number from 1719 to 3828 seeds m −2 , seed weight from 125 to 169 g 1000 seeds −1 , oil concentration from 16.1 to 18.7% and protein concentration from 32.8 to 35.3%. Overall, very late seeding reduced yield, seed weight, and oil but did not affect protein. A growing body of evidence suggests that amending soil with biosolids can be an integral component of sustainable agriculture. Despite strong evidence supporting its beneficial use in agriculture, there are concerns that chemicals, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products, could present a risk to terrestrial ecosystems and human health. Triclosan is one of the most commonly detected compounds in biosolids. To date, laboratory studies indicate that triclosan likely poses a de minimis risk to field crops; however, these studies were either conducted under unrealistic exposure conditions or only assessed 1 or 2 formulations of biosolids. The purpose of the present study was to characterize the effects of triclosan on field crops in soils amended with 4 different formulations of biosolids (liquid, dewatered, compost, and alkaline-hydrolyzed), containing both background and spiked triclosan concentrations, following best management practices used in the province of Ontario. Three crop species (corn, soybean, and spring wheat) were evaluated using several plant growth endpoints (e.g., root wet mass, shoot length, shoot wet/dry mass) in 70-d to 90-d potted soil tests. The results indicated no adverse impact of triclosan on any crop-biosolids combination. Conversely, amending soil with biosolids either enhanced or had no negative effect, on the growth of plants. Results of the present study suggest little risk of triclosan to crops in agricultural fields amended with biosolids. Environ Toxicol Chem 2017;36:1896-1908. © 2016 SETAC.
