Wound healing is a complex process that can be further complicated in chronic wounds, leading to prolonged healing times, high healthcare costs, and potential patient morbidity. Nanotechnology has shown great promise in developing advanced wound dressings that promote wound healing and prevent infection. The review article presents a comprehensive search strategy that was applied to four databases, namely Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar, using specific keywords and inclusion/exclusion criteria to select a representative sample of 164 research articles published between 2001 and 2023. This review article provides an updated overview of the different types of nanomaterials used in wound dressings, including nanofibers, nanocomposites, silver-based nanoparticles, lipid nanoparticles, and polymeric nanoparticles. Several recent studies have shown the potential benefits of using nanomaterials in wound care, including the use of hydrogel/nano silver-based dressings in treating diabetic foot wounds, the use of copper oxide-infused dressings in difficult-to-treat wounds, and the use of chitosan nanofiber mats in burn dressings. Overall, developing nanomaterials in wound care has complemented nanotechnology in drug delivery systems, providing biocompatible and biodegradable nanomaterials that enhance wound healing and provide sustained drug release. Wound dressings are an effective and convenient method of wound care that can prevent wound contamination, support the injured area, control hemorrhaging, and reduce pain and inflammation. This review article provides valuable insights into the potential role of individual nanoformulations used in wound dressings in promoting wound healing and preventing infections, and serves as an excellent resource for clinicians, researchers, and patients seeking improved healing outcomes.

Wounds occur when skin integrity is broken and the skin is damaged. With progressive changes in the disease spectrum, the acute wounds caused by mechanical trauma have been become less common, while chronic wounds triggered with aging, diabetes and infection have become more frequent. Chronic wounds now affect more than 6 million people in the United States, amounting to 10 billion dollars in annual expenditure. However, the treatment of chronic wounds is associated with numerous challenges. Traditional remedies for chronic wounds include skin grafting, flap transplantation, negative-pressure wound therapy, and gauze dressing, all of which can cause tissue damage or activity limitations. Nanobiotechnology — which comprises a diverse array of technologies derived from engineering, chemistry, and biology — is now being applied in biomedical practice. Here, we review the design, application, and clinical trials for nanotechnology-based therapies for chronic wound healing, highlighting the clinical potential of nanobiotechnology in such treatments. By summarizing previous nanobiotechnology studies, we lay the foundation for future wound care via a nanotech-based multifunctional smart system.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the biological effects and clinical implications of nano-silver in the treatment of wounds. METHODS: This was a qualitative systematic review, prepared according to the PRISMA methodology (Key Items for Reporting Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses). We searched for studies published in the Pubmed and Embase databases, using the Decs/MESH descriptors: “Wounds”, “Curative” and “Nanoparticles” and their correspondents in English. Se incluyeron ensayos clínicos aleatorizados y no aleatorizados, disponibles en línea, con texto completo, en portugués e inglés y publicados entre 2012 y mayo de 2022. Randomized and non-randomized clinical trials, available online, with full text, in Portuguese and English and published from 2012 to May 2022, were included. Regarding the methodological analysis, we chose to select articles with scores above 70% on the STROBE scale. RESULTS: After analysis, 08 articles were considered eligible to compose this systematic review. There are indications in the literature of modulation of the inflammatory response by the action of silver, justified by its ability to reduce the levels of pro-inflammatory markers and because it is involved in the alteration or suppression of inflammatory events in the initial stages of wound healing. CONCLUSION: Nano-silver dressings proved to be effective for re-epithelialization, healing, antimicrobial action, ease of application and tolerance. The development of nano-silver materials combined with continuous research can improve the material's performance in physical, chemical and biological aspects.
