Efficacy and safety of radiofrequency catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation in chronic hemodialysis patients

Abstract: During 5-years of follow-up, the use of multiple RFCA procedures for AF in patients undergoing HD was favorable, whereas the use of a single procedure was disappointing. Multiple RFCA procedures can be an efficient approach to the treatment of AF in HD patients.

“…184,185 In a singlecentre study with a 5-year follow-up, multiple ablation procedures for AF achieved an efficacy of 80% in terms of sinus rhythm maintenance, similar to the efficacy of non-haemodialysis patients, whereas the efficacy of a single procedure was scarce. 186 Other reports confirm the high recurrence rate of AF in haemodialysis patients and the need for repeated procedures. 187 In CKD patients treated with AF ablation, the risk of procedure-related vascular complications is increased in comparison with patients with normal kidney function.…”

“…None of the three patients were treated with antiarrhythmic drugs or radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) because of the lack of AF symptoms. As favorable outcomes of RFCA have been reported in hemodialysis patients, 15 RFCA was considered to reduce the risk of ischemic stroke and avoid anticoagulant therapy.…”

“…This result indicates that the durability of PVI is necessary in HD patients as well as in non-HD patients. 19 Limitation This report has several limitations. First, this study had a very small sample size.…”
