Efficacy, feasibility and patient acceptability of ultrasound‐guided manual vacuum aspiration for treating early pregnancy loss

Abstract: USG-MVA is an effective treatment for the management of early pregnancy loss in an out-patient setting. It is an alternative to surgical evacuation under general anaesthesia, particularly for women desiring chromosomal analysis of products of conception. Further studies are required to investigate its health-related and economic benefits in hospital service provision.

“…In one review, Grewal et al performed a randomized controlled trial showing that complication rates were lower for surgical termination of pregnancy performed under ultrasound guidance than for surgical termination of pregnancy without ultrasound guidance 12 . This has been confirmed by other studies 12–15 . In the present study, the incidence of surgical complications in the ultrasound group was lower than that in the non‐ultrasound group (1% vs. 14%), and the difference was statistically significant (Table 3 and Table 4).…”

[12][13][14][15] In the present study, the incidence of surgical complications in the ultrasound group was lower than that in the non-ultrasound group (1% vs. 14%), and the difference was statistically significant (Table 3 and Table 4). This also confirms the findings from previous studies.…”

“…Last, we also acknowledge the evidence basis for the safety of manual vacuum aspiration, which was temporarily not performed at our institution during this timeframe. Indeed, previous authors have demonstrated similarly low complication rates with MVA when compared to EVA [ 15 17 ], suggesting that inferences of the benefit of transvaginal ultrasonography in this population can be made as well.…”

“…With the efficacy of 97.1 %, it was achievable in office settings and was associated with a high degree of patient satisfaction with many advantages over medical management with Misoprostol. 15 After completion of the procedure, the products of conception are collected in a kidney tray. The additional benefit of MVA was obtaining products of the conception of 94.3% for cytogenetic analysis.…”
