Efficacy of a Benthic Trawl for Sampling Small‐Bodied Fishes in Large River Systems

Abstract: We conducted a study from 1998 to 2001 to determine the efficacy of a benthic trawl designed to increase species detection and reduce the incidence of zero catches of small-bodied fishes. We modified a standard two-seam slingshot balloon trawl by covering the entire trawl with a small-mesh cover. After completing 281 hauls with the modified (Missouri) trawl, we discovered that most fish passed through the body of the standard trawl and were captured in the cover. Logistic regression indicated no noticeable eff… Show more

“…The mini-Missouri trawl is a two-layer, balloon trawl with a cover of 4.76-mm, delta-style mesh and an inner trawl body of 17.46-mmbar mesh. The trawl narrows from 2.44 m at the headrope to 0.46 m at the midsection and the cod end (Herzog et al 2005). The headrope with floats and a chained footrope are tied to otter boards (40.6 3 22.86 cm, weighing 8.20 kg).…”

“…Fish were sampled using a modified Missouri trawl, seine, and boat-mounted electrofishing system. A modified Missouri trawl was used due to its effectiveness at sampling small-bodied fishes in moderate to large riverine systems (Herzog et al 2005). The opening of the trawl was 2.4 m wide and 0.6 m tall.…”

“…Although 39 species were common to the mainstem and its tributary network, only two of its large-bodied species (>250 mm), the river and silver redhorses (Moxostoma anisurum) were collected, coming &om the mouths of two major tributaries and upstream in one minor tributary. Therefore, the connectivity among the mainstem and its tributaries may by largely temporal or transitory and restricted to major tributaries at least for the large-bodied ichthyofauna Species selectivity of the various gear types as illustrated here indicates the necessity of utilizing a variety of sampling methodologies when inventorying the ichthyofauna of a major river basin, particularly for benthic fishes (Gutreuter et al 1998, Herzog et al 2005. Boat electrofishing and chemical sampling, while effective in sampling localized areas, do not provide the profile of longitudinal distribution that can be obtained by sampling with gillnetting and benthic trawling.…”
