“…Homemade aqueous extracts based on neem plant material (leaves, seeds, seed cake, and unformulated oil) have been successfully used for the control of blattodean pests (Ibrahim and Demisse 2013), hemipteran pests (Aziz et al 2013;Degri et al 2013;Gupta and Pathak 2009), lepidopteran pests (Abate 2011;Attia et al 2011;Kumar et al 2015;Okrikata et al 2016), and thysanopteran pests (Shiberu et al 2012) in field application (Tables 1 and 2). Out of 8 trials against lepidopteran pests, neem aqueous extracts showed efficacy in 7 trials.…”

“…In field applications, aqueous extracts of Siam weed controlled coleopteran pests (Onunkun 2012), lepidopteran pests (Amoabeng et al 2013(Amoabeng et al , 2014Ezena et al 2016), and hemipteran pests (Amoabeng et al 2013(Amoabeng et al , 2014Degri et al 2013;Ezena et al 2016) (Table 1). Siam weed aqueous extracts were consistently (8 out of 9 instances) superior to negative controls and often comparable (7 out of 11 instances) to positive controls (Table 2).…”

“…The result therefore indicates that improved tomato varieties tolerate insect pest's infestations during their growth stages than local variety. The higher mean fruit weight and yield recorded under improved tomato varieties indicate that the fruits were not seriously damaged by H.armigera (Degri and Mailafiya, 2013) while lower fruit weight and yield recorded under local variety implies serious damage by due to its H.armigerasusceptibility to the pest. Therefore, farmers using improved tomato varieties along other pest management measures will have a better yield guarantee than those using local variety.…”

“…The higher mean number of damaged fruits recorded on local tomato variety showed that local tomato variety suffered serious damage from the insect pests. Hence the lowest mean number of undamaged fruits/plant (Schuster, 1977a, Faizaet al, 2012, Degri and Mailafiya, 2013. Less damaged fruits recorded under improved tomato variety means less H.armigera damage to the pest.…”

“…Insecticidal properties of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss, Meliaceae) have been traditionally used in cultural practices for several thousand years (Philogène et al, 2003;Philogène et al, 2008). Neem compounds cause effects ranging from repellency to toxicity against a wide spectrum of insect pests including Orthoptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera and Hemiptera (Schmutterer, 1990;Isman, 2006;Siddiqui et al, 2009;Degri et al, 2013;Shannag et al, 2014;Mondédji et al, 2016). These biological properties are mediated by different groups of compounds among which limonoids and particularly azadirachtin mainly present in the neem seeds.…”
