Improvement of the efficiency of modern power systems requires the development of storage technologies, optimization of operation modes, and increased flexibility. Currently, various technical solutions are used for electricity storage. The results of a literary review with an analysis of existing energy storage systems are presented, their advantages and disadvantages are considered. One of the promising solutions is the use of hydrogen as an energy storage medium. The creation of corresponding energy complexes makes it possible to obtain hydrogen by electrolysis of water, and then use it to cover peak loads. Various schemes with hydrogen-fired gas turbines with a pressure up to 35 MPa and a temperature of 1500–1700 °C were considered. The new scheme of power plant with hydrogen-fired gas turbines was synthesized, which includes a power block, hydrogen generation blocks and hydrogen and oxygen preparation unit for burning. An atmospheric electrolyzer was considered as a hydrogen and oxygen generator. For the proposed scheme, parametric optimization was performed, where the storage efficiency factor has been used as a criterion. The influence of inlet temperature in the combustion chamber, the compression rate of hydrogen and oxygen, as well as the specific energy costs of the electrolyzer were analyzed. The results of the numerical experiment were approximated in the form of polynomial dependencies, and can be used in further research on the economic efficiency of proposed power plant.

The need to modernize existing district heating systems is due to increased requirements for their flexibility, energy efficiency, and environmental friendliness. The technical policy on district heating pursued in different countries centers on the listed goals and takes account of historical, climatic, and regional features of the resource, technology, and economic availability of various thermal energy sources. This study aims to analyze methods designed to improve the flexibility, energy efficiency, and environmental friendliness of district heating systems. The focus of the study is district heating system, which provides heating and hot water supply to consumers and consists of various types of thermal energy sources. The work shows the possibility for the heating system to transition from the third generation to the fourth one, which differ in their level of intellectualization. The establishment of an intelligent control system will ensure the interaction of various heat sources, but this is a separate strand of research. In this study, a model and a methodology were developed to optimize the structure of thermal energy sources and their operating conditions when covering the heat load curve of a territory with a predominance of household consumers. Gas-reciprocating and gas-turbine cogeneration plants are considered as the main thermal energy sources, whose efficiency is boosted through their joint operation with electric boilers, thermal energy storage systems, low-grade heat sources, and absorption chillers. The primary emphasis of the study is on the assessment of the environmental benefit to be gained by using cogeneration plants as a factor of enhancing the investment appeal of the district heating systems. The findings suggest that the transition of district heating systems to the next generation is impossible without changing the institutional environment, strengthening the role of active consumers, and introducing intelligent control for district heating systems.

Providing comfortable living conditions of the local community is the important condition of the stable development and continued existence of remote areas of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation (AZRF) in modern Russia. The particular role played in this process is assigned to heat supply systems whose reliable and uninterrupted operation is fraught with various problems. The main ones are related to increased costs for the purchase of organic fuel and its delivery to remote areas. This circumstance leads to the fact that the prime cost of thermal energy is higher than the rates level, resulting in unprofitable activity of heat generating facilities, so their continued existence becomes impossible without government subsidies. Under these conditions one of the ways to save imported organic fuel and therefore reduce the prime cost of thermal energy can be the utilization of wind power plants (WPPs) in conjunction with boiler houses for heat supply in remote areas with increased wind potential. THE PURPOSE. It should be shown on the example of the Murmansk region that the utilization of WPPs in conjunction with boiler houses for heat supply in remote areas is a good decision to reduce the prime cost of thermal energy. METHODS. The comparison of the prime cost of thermal energy in a case of heat supply only from boiler houses with the one when utilizing WPPs in conjunction with boiler houses for heat supply. RESULTS. It is shown that the utilization of WPPs in conjunction with boiler houses with a capacity of more than 0.1 Gcal/h for heat supply in remote areas of the Murmansk region saves 60-90% of organic fuel worth 25,000-72,000 rubles/tce at boiler houses and thereby reduces the prime cost of thermal energy by 10-60%. An effect of the utilization of WPPs is reduced for boiler houses of lower capacity, with the lower the boiler house capacity, the more the utilization of WPP being economically impractical compared to a case of heat supply only from a boiler house. CONCLUSION. The results obtained allow us to assess the prospects of the utilization of WPPs in conjunction with boiler houses for heat supply in remote areas of AZRF in terms of the effectiveness of such utilization.
