Efficiency of lime application on sod-podzolic soil in the north-western region of Russia

Abstract: The article presents the analysis of the results of a long-term experiment on studying the effectiveness of the combination of the doses of lime and mineral fertilizers on sod-podzolic sandy loam soil in crop rotation in the Leningrad region. Research experiments are carried out in the six-field crop rotation. The data obtained in the course of long-term stationary field experiments are more reliable and accurate compared to the results of model experiments. The liming and long-term uses of mineral fertilizers… Show more

“…Neutralization of soil acidity via liming has a high positive effect on the mineralization of soil nitrogen compounds and the effectiveness of nitrogen fertilizers. The soil pH step change from 4.3 to 6.3 increased the nitrifying ability of Eutric Albic Retisol by four times [99]. Nitrogen fertilizers, due to the manifestation of characteristic physiological acidity, strongly acidify the soil under condition of their long-term application in crop rotation; consequently, periodic liming of the soil is an indispensable condition for increasing their effectiveness [100].…”

“…Over the past 10 years, negative changes in the quality of agricultural land are mainly caused by a significant reduction in the use of all types of fertilizers and liming (Polyakov et al, 2022). Extensive researches are devoted to various aspects of the liming of acidic soils (Danilov;Yakovleva;Nikolaeva, 2020;Islam et al, 2021;Kamprath;Smyth, 2005;Lavrishchev et al, 2020;Litvinovich et al, 2021aLitvinovich et al, , 2021bMohammed;Aman;Zewide, 2021;Nebolsin;Nebolsina, 2010;Opala, 2017). One of the problems of reclamation of acid soils is that most liming materials are quickly depleted in this soil due to leaching and fixation of cations (Lavrishchev et al, 2020;Rashid et al, 2021;Xu et al, 2022).…”

“…Long-term application of mineral N can lead to unfavourable changes in physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil and cause or contribute to soil degradation processes (Koković et al, 2018;Gupta et al, 2019;Sainju et al, 2019;Danilov et al, 2020;Jones et al, 2020;. This ultimately affects the adequate ecological functioning of the soil and its sustainability (Zhou et al, 2020;Craig et al, 2021).…”
