Efficient and low‐cost defense against distributed denial‐of‐service attacks in SDN‐based networks

Abstract: SummaryDistributed are common threats in many networks, where attackers attempt to make victim servers unavailable to other users by flooding them with worthless requests. These attacks cannot be easily stopped by firewalls, since they forge lots of connections to victims with various IP addresses. The paper aims to exploit the software‐defined networking (SDN) technique to defend against DDoS attacks. However, the controller has to handle lots of connections launched by DDoS attacks, which burdens it with a h… Show more

“…ey would also have a substantial influence on the performance of SDN, as the controller would have to deal with several connections produced by the DDOS attacks. As a result, Y. C. Wang and Y. C. Wang [35] designed a lightweight but effective ELD method to protect against protocol-type DDoS attacks, with the goal of reducing the controller's operating cost in detecting and stopping attacks quickly. Due to limited memory space, the authors proposed an NRES data storage technique using ELD to assist the controller in recording current packets while saving a small number of older packets for references, which presents a more comprehensive and higher level picture of attacks.…”

“…And, Wang and Wang 33 explored a strategic approach to mitigating Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks within SDN environments. The study focused on developing an efficient and cost-effective defense mechanism against DDoS threats, leveraging the programmability and centralized control capabilities inherent in SDN.…”

“…In [46], The destructive effect of the DDoS attack on the controller layer in SDN and the extent of violations in the performance of the entire SDN system are investigated. Reduction of damage and defending against the DDoS attack has been considered in [47]. The authors have presented a low-cost approach to reducing the controller's overhead.…”
