Efficient and thermally stable organic solar cells based on small molecule donor and polymer acceptor

Abstract: Efficient organic solar cells (OSCs) often use combination of polymer donor and small molecule acceptor. Herein we demonstrate efficient and thermally stable OSCs with combination of small molecule donor and polymer acceptor, which is expected to expand the research field of OSCs. Typical small molecule donors show strong intermolecular interactions and high crystallinity, and consequently do not match polymer acceptors because of large-size phase separation. We develop a small molecule donor with suppressed π… Show more

“…Organic solar cells (OSCs) have great prospects for many industrial applications thanks to their flexibility, semitransparency, and light weight. [ 1–6 ] Nonfullerene small molecular acceptors (SMAs) [ 7–29 ] are the main driving force for the recent development of the field, with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over 17% reported by different teams. [ 30–43 ] SMAs have many attractive properties including their strong and tunable absorption, the easily adjustable energy levels and the enhanced chemical and device stability.…”

“…The small-molecule donor of DR3TBDTC was synthesized as the reported method in our laboratory. 50 Synthesis of DC3TBDTC. Compound (1) 50 (0.10 g, 0.057 mmol) and methyl 2-cyanoacetate (0.057 g, 0.57 mmol) were dissolved in anhydrous CHCl 3 (15 mL), and then two drops of triethylamine were added to the mixture.…”

“…[44][45][46][47][48][49] Recently, we have developed a small-molecule donor with large steric hindrance at the core to inhibit the aggregation of backbones, and greatly improved the performance of M D /P Atype OSCs. 50 The preliminary result motivates us to investigate the structure-performance relationship of molecules and develop efficient small-molecule donors for M D /P A -type OSCs.…”

“…BTEC‐1F shows two strong exothermic peaks at 148.3 and 209.2 °C, implying the formation of two crystalline phase . By contrast, a broad and weak exothermic peak at 210.6 °C is recorded in BTEC‐2F, indicating significantly decreased crystallinity . As a result, BTEC‐2F is proved to have a low crystallization propensity, but with intimate molecular stacking, which are beneficial for improving the phase‐separated morphology and enhancing the charge transport, separately.…”
