Efficient calculation of interior scattering from cavities with small modifications

Abstract: The analysis of the interior scattering from open cavities with small modifications is an important task in designing a stealthy jet engine. Previous research has shown the magnetic field integral equation with the Kirchhoff approximation can be used to calculate the cavity interior scattering. However, it must repeat the expensive method of moments (MoM) solution even when the cavity is modified only slightly. In this Letter, the efficient method based on the partitionedinverse formula and the Sherman-Morriso… Show more

“…Even though the problem definition above bears a semblance of a partial geometry modification problem, it is not a typification of partial geometry modification problems in which parts of the EM structure are removed or replaced for alteration and modification 29 , 30 . This is mainly because the geometry of the EM structure (and its associated elements) in this study, in and of itself, is not altered or modified.…”

“…Previous research [1–3] shows that the magnetic field integral equation (MFIE) with the Kirchhoff approximation (KA) [1, 4] can be used to calculate the interior scattering from cavities. To solve the MFIE, the iterative physical optics (IPO) [1] and the method of moments (MoM) [2, 3] can be applied. However, the MoM can give more accurate results than the IPO for complex cavities [2].…”

“…Introduction: The prediction of the interior scattering from open-ended cavities is an important aspect in designing stealthy engine inlets and nozzles. Previous research [1][2][3] shows that the magnetic field integral equation (MFIE) with the Kirchhoff approximation (KA) [1,4] can be used to calculate the interior scattering from cavities. To solve the MFIE, the iterative physical optics (IPO) [1] and the method of moments (MoM) [2,3] can be applied.…”
