Efficient differential Fourier-transform spectrometer for precision Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect measurements

Abstract: Context. Precision measurements of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in clusters of galaxies require excellent rejection of common-mode signals and wide frequency coverage. Aims. We describe an imaging, efficient, differential Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS), optimized for measurements of faint brightness gradients at millimeter wavelengths. Methods. Our instrument is based on a Martin-Puplett interferometer (MPI) configuration. We combined two MPIs working synchronously to use the whole input power. In our i… Show more

“…These are cooled to about 300 mK through a wet N 2 plus 4 He cryostat, and a 3 He sub-K refrigerator. OLIMPO is equipped with a differential Fourier transform spectrometer (DFTS) [4,5], with a maximum resolution ∆ν = 1.8 GHz, and a custom attitude control system with arcmin pointing accuracy. OLIMPO is designed for a long-duration polar stratospheric balloon flight.…”

“…These concepts use a Fourier-Transform-Spectrometer (FTS) approach to sample the absolute CMB sky intensity in hundreds of frequency channels covering a few×(10 GHz − 1 THz). A similar FTS concept was used by COBE/FIRAS to measure the CMB energy spectrum in the 1990's, and by Olimpo (Masi et al 2003;Schillaci et al 2014), a balloon-borne SZ experiment targeting clusters that had its first flight in mid-2018.…”
