Efficient eco-friendly crude oil adsorptive chitosan derivatives: kinetics, equilibrium and thermodynamic studies

Abstract: In the present study, low-cost oil adsorptive materials based on chitosan (CS) and its functionalized derivatives (aminated chitosan (AmCS) and nonanyl chitosan schiffbase (NCS) were undertaken. The chemical structure of the CS sorbents, as well as its surface morphologies, was confirmed by Fourier infrared (FT-IR)spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Parameters affecting the sorption capacity such as reaction time, crude oil concentration, adsorbent dose, and temperatures were studied. Equilibr… Show more

“…Our results agreed with that reported by Omer et al for the uptake of oil spill by nonanyl chitosan-poly (butyl acrylate) grafted copolymer 25 . The same trend was also recorded for the removal of the crude oil spill by the chitosan and chitosan Schiff base derivatives 26 .
Figure 3 Effect of various parameters on the uptake of crude oil onto Str and (Str-co-Benz) ( A ) adsorbent amount, ( B ) contact time, ( C ) initial oil concentration, and ( D ) agitation speed.

“…[11][12][13] Recent publications of chitosan and derivatives have been classified into their various applications in food, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical, textile, paper, agriculture, and environmental applications. [14,15] Chitosan film, when prepared from chitosan solution in acetic acid, possesses some unpleasant properties, such as its remaining acid content and poor mechanical properties. A new chitosan aqueous dispersion was developed as a film-forming material with a lower acid content and improved mechanical properties.…”
