Biomass assumes an increasingly vital role in the realm of renewable energy and sustainable development due to its abundant availability, renewability, and minimal environmental impact. Within this context, 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), derived from sugar dehydration, stands out as a critical bio‐derived product. It serves as a pivotal multifunctional platform compound, integral in synthesizing various vital chemicals, including furan‐based polymers, fine chemicals, and biofuels. The high reactivity of HMF, attributed to its highly active aldehyde, hydroxyl, and furan ring, underscores the challenge of selectively regulating its conversion to obtain the desired products. This review highlights the research progress on efficient catalytic systems for HMF synthesis, oxidation, reduction, and etherification. Additionally, it outlines the techno‐economic analysis (TEA) and prospective research directions for the production of furan‐based chemicals. Despite significant progress in catalysis research, and certain process routes demonstrating substantial economics, with key indicators surpassing petroleum‐based products, a gap persists between fundamental research and large‐scale industrialization. This is due to the lack of comprehensive engineering research on bio‐based chemicals, making the commercialization process a distant goal. The electrochemical synthesis for value‐added chemicals and fuels via carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) offers an effective route to close the anthropogenic carbon cycle and store renewable energy. Currently, the copper‐based catalyst is still the only choice for generating various CO2RR species beyond two electron products. However, the wide range of CO2RR products generated on copper leads to low selectivity, and their low concentrations in electrolytes pose great costs in the downstream purification process and significantly challenge the scalability of this technology. To make this technology economically viable, enhancing product selectivity is crucial. In this review, we identify the primary CO2RR species and discuss the latest insights into the reaction mechanisms controlling CO2RR selectivity. Then, we examined factors that affect CO2RR selectivity. Emphasizing these factors in catalyst design, we highlight the importance of advanced technologies to expand our knowledge and prospects for the future of the CO2RR.

Porous nanoparticles mark a significant stride toward achieving miniaturization and harnessing nanoscale properties that nature has employed for eons. Today's chemists have transcended the role of mere observers of matter; they're now empowered to manipulate and engineer novel materials, tailoring them with precise physicochemical attributes. This transition has unlocked opportunities to craft materials with intentional properties, mirroring the efficiencies and functionalities naturally evolved over millions of years. Among them, porous nanostructures based on metals have become promising materials for next generation of electrochemical devices for energy harvesting purpose due to their outstanding characteristics at the nanoscale, such as tunable surface area and surface chemistry and strong stability under operations. The performance of porous nanostructure‐based materials and devices is mainly governed by the surface structure, composition, size, defects, and the state of their interfaces. Here, some of the important nanoporose structures synthesis methods and the fundamental science behind structure formation and modification during synthesis process and their applications in the fields of electrochemical energy harvesting are presented and discussed. Future perspectives and challenges are highlighted to demonstrate the prominence of porose nanostructures and the importance of surface engineering in next‐generation energy harvesting applications.
