Efficient intra mode decision for low complexity HEVC screen content compression

Abstract: High efficiency video coding screen content coding (HEVC-SCC) extension is the latest HEVC development to improve the compression performance of screen content (SC) video. Similar to HEVC, the intra mode selection in HEVC-SCC is performed all the coding unit (CU) partitions to find the least rate distortion (RD) cost. Furthermore, additional intra tools are introduced to improve HEVC-SCC coding efficiency. However, these new tools could cause high computation complexity which restricts HEVC-SCC from ongoing ap… Show more

“…A fast TU size decision algorithm is proposed in [19] using Bayes decision method and the variance relationship between the residual factor and the transform size, which can reduce the number of candidates for transform size in HEVC. [20] proposed a HEVC-SCC effective intra mode decision method that effectively utilizes the texture complexity of the HE tree block. The method analyzes the texture complexity of the SC tree block according to the degree of change of the brightness value.…”

“…The Haar wavelet coefficients based on the texture of the CU are designed in [16] to determine whether the CU is to be continuously split. A fast intra prediction method based on texture complexity is proposed in [17], which can effectively decrease the computational complexity of H.265/HEVC. A fast intra CU partitioning scheme based on texture classification and CNN classifier is exploited [18], which decreases the calculation complexity of intra coding in H.265/HEVC by considering the heterogeneous texture features in CNN.…”
