Efficient IP-Level Network Topology Capture

Abstract: Abstract. Large-scale distributed traceroute-based measurement systems are used to obtain the topology of the internet at the IP-level and can be used to monitor and understand the behavior of the network. However, existing approaches to measuring the public IPv4 network space often require several days to obtain a full graph, which is too slow to capture much of the network's dynamics. This paper presents a new network topology capture algorithm, NTC, which aims to better capture network dynamics through acce… Show more

“…Current explorations still rely on the extensive use of tracer-oute: one collects routes from a limited set of sources to a large set of destinations, and then merges the obtained paths into a graph. This method has been adopted by many influential network topology discovery projects [2, 1,3,19,14,22,6]. In order to better simulate the Internet routes, we deeply study the real traceroute traces of two network topology datasets: iPlane [19] and skitter [2].…”

“…It is very important to track how a packet is routed inside Internet, which is of great help to Internet measurement and modeling. Specifically, it could assist the deployment of sources and destinations for traceroute which is a generally employed tool to sample Internet [2, 1,3,19,14,22,6,7]. However, the realistic routing process in Internet is complicated, which makes the simulation of the Internet routes be a significant challenge.…”
