Efficient rendering of caustics with streamed photon mapping

Abstract: In this paper, we present the streamed photon mapping method for enhancing the rendering of caustics. In order to achieve a realistic caustic effect, global illumination methods require additional data, which are gathered by creating a caustic map or increasing the number of samples used for rendering. Our method employs a stream of photons with a varying luminance level depending on the material properties of the surface. The application of a concentrated photon stream provides the ability to render caustics … Show more

“…The same assumptions accompany the computational environment where such parameters as the number of analysed light rays, the number of iterations, the number of interactions of each ray with the environment, the density of computational mesh division, etc. are pre-defined [20]. Every simplifying assumption accepted at the initial stage of calculations means obtaining the results to a certain extent different from the results of laboratory measurements for the analogous optical systems of luminaires.…”

“…A series of problems in the practical application of "exclusive" and "special" design led to the emergence of general design, and then, this design concept was applied to residential design in the United States. In 2004, the US general design center formulated universal design in house based on this concept, which is a common residential design standard that combines the general design idea with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) to serve all people [5]. Its proposal means that the design of ordinary residential and outdoor environment does not have the specificity of the target population and should include all people with different physical functions and age characteristics.…”

“…With the iterative method, the optimum solutions often meeting the complex assumptions in fields such as automotive lighting, road lighting or asymmetrical surface lighting were reached. The dynamic development of computers, knowledge how the light is distributed and how it interacts with the materials reflecting and transmitting the luminous flux allowed us to effectively simulate optical systems [11][12][13]. To a great extent, it reduced the time required to design the luminaires and then minimized the prototype production needs.…”
