Efficient stabilization of natural curcuminoids mediated by oil body encapsulation

Abstract: Curcumin is a natural hydrophobic polyphenol found in the powdered rhizomes of Curcuma longa. Due to its capacity to interfere with many signalling pathways, it has been shown that curcumin has potential beneficial pharmacological effects including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic properties. However, the use of curcumin is fairly restricted because of its poor water solubility, low bioavailability, inadequate tissue absorption and degradation at alkaline pH. In the present contribution, we firs… Show more

“…OBs were extracted from almond seeds. OB purification was carried out by a two-layer flotation procedure as previously reported [22] , and a further purification step was performed consisting of two sequential washings with 2.0 M NaCl. OBs were finally resuspended in 150 mM Tris–HCl, pH 7.5, containing 0.6 M sucrose.…”

“…According to the relative proportions of triacylglycerols (TAGs), PLs, and proteins, stable OBs can be technically reconstituted with these three essential constituents [21] . Reconstituted oil bodies (ROBs), as well as native OBs, have been previously reported as useful vehicles for the stabilization of curcumin, another polyphenol [22] .…”

“…DMC or BDMC are more stable than CUR in physiological medium and both possess anti‐inflammation and anticancer activities . DMC inhibited prostate cancer cell proliferation via AMP‐activated protein kinase (AMPK)‐induced downregulation of heat shock protein (HSP) 70 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) .…”

“…Curcumin (phytochemical polyphenol) as main pigment of ginger herbal extracts (Zingiber officinale) and turmeric (Curcuma longa) known as functional food source in the nutritive industry [5][6][7]. Curcumin (principal curcuminoid of spice turmeric) with two other compounds like desmethoxycurcumin and bis-desmethoxycurcumin) [8][9][10] exhibit a keto-enol tautomerism [11,12] and therefore have diverce reactivity. Its daily application as condiment and spice has chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic which candidate it for treatment of ailments such as lung cancer, skin and liver diseases [13][14][15].…”
