Efficient Synthesis of Structured Phospholipids Containing Short-Chain Fatty Acids over a Sulfonated Zn-SBA-15 Catalyst

Abstract: Catalytic production of structured phospholipids (SPLs) containing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in an efficient heterogeneous manner is of great importance from the standpoint of food engineering. Herein, a bifunctionalized sulfonated Zn-SBA-15 catalyst was studied for SPL synthesis through interesterification of soybean lecithin with ethyl propionate or methyl butyrate. Various characterization techniques such as pyridine Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultrav… Show more

“…For the chemical-mediated method, chemicals are used to react with the functional groups (such as the carbon-carbon double bond and polar head group) of PLs, thus resulting in chemical change of PLs and creating new kinds of PLs. Zhang, et al [15,16] have used mesoporous organ sulfonic acid-functionalized SBA-15 catalysts and sulfonated Zn-SBA-15 catalysts to prepare structured phospholipids containing medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) and shortchain fatty acids (SCFA), respectively. Their results proposed that heterogeneous catalysts with mesopores might be more efficient, economical, and eco-friendly for the production of SPLs with MCFA and SCFA.…”

“…[18,19] Meanwhile, their catalytic properties can be flexibly adjusted via the immobilization with various active components over the inactive surface of mesoporous silica. [20][21][22] Thus, ordered mesoporous materials are regarded as the ideal solid carriers for versatile heterogeneous catalysts. Up to now, the preparation and application of MCM-41-type mesoporous catalysts, via utilizing MCM-41 as the solid carrier to immobilize ILs, have been widely investigated.…”
