Eigenmode analysis of field line oscillations interacting with the ionosphere‐atmosphere‐solid earth electromagnetic coupled system

Abstract: Abstract. In order to understand the effect of ionosphere on the localized toroidal magnetic shell oscillation (field line oscillation), we have constructed a rectangular box model for the magnetosphere-ionosphere-solid earth system including the anisotropically conducting ionosphere and performed the eigenmode analysis of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves in the model. We have found that the eigenmodes of field line oscillation are effectively controlled by the height-integrated Pedersen and Hall conductivi… Show more

“…Before showing the results, we shall verify that the model derives physically correct results. This is done by the comparing the numerical values of the ionospheric electric field with the previous works of Yoshikawa and Itonaga (1996) and Yoshikawa et al (1999) as follows.…”

“…That is, the ionospheric inductive electric field produced by the Hall current reduces the resultant static field. The total ionospheric electric field including the effect of H is given by equation (11) in Yoshikawa et al (1999). We rewrite the equation as follows:…”

“…In general, the reflection coefficient can be complex if we include the phase relation at the boundary (e.g., Yoshikawa et al, 1999). We neglected such phase variations at the ionosphere for simplicity in this study.…”

“…The ionospheric effects also play an significant role in determining the mode structure and observational feature of ULF waves. It has been studied how FLR structure and phases along the magnetic field lines are affected by the finite ionospheric conductivities (e.g., Hughes and Southwood, 1976;Newton et al, 1978;Allan and Knox, 1979;Allan, 1982;Ellis and Southwood, 1983;Budnik et al, 1998;Yoshikawa et al, 1999;Southwood and Kivelson, 2001). Therefore, it is important to investigate the details of mode structure using a realistic model.…”
