Ejaculation and sperm characteristics in men with cauda equina and conus medullaris syndromes

Abstract: Ejaculation is difficult to induce using VM in patients with CE and CM lesions, and requires high doses of midodrine. Sperm counts were generally low, and asthenospermia and necrospermia were found in the majority of specimens. Cryopreservation of sperm should be systematic in case of medically assisted procreation.

“…Orgasm is unlikely in both sexes when there is a complete lesion and no sacral reflexes [5,7]. Moreover, the fertility potential is reduced compared with other SCI conditions [25]. The ISAFSCI provides a mechanism to describe the impact of SCI on sexual responses [8,10].…”

“…Impaired spermatogenesis has been observed after spinal cord injury (Salsabili et al., 2009). Disruption of testicular neural input leads to regressed spermatogenesis; however, most studies of sperm quality have been performed on supra‐sacral lesions (Hadiji et al., 2017). They have found no abnormality in sperm counts (Hadiji et al., 2017).…”

They have found no abnormality in sperm counts (Hadiji et al., 2017). Alterations in vitality and motility of spermatozoa have not been observed, not worsen with time (Hadiji et al., 2017).…”
