Elastic full-waveform inversion for VTI media: Methodology and sensitivity analysis

Abstract: Most existing implementations of full-waveform inversion (FWI) are limited to acoustic approximations. In this paper, we present an algorithm for time-domain elastic FWI in laterally heterogeneous VTI (transversely isotropic with a vertical symmetry axis) media. The adjoint-state method is employed to derive the gradients of the objective function with respect to the stiffness coefficients and then to a chosen set of VTI parameters. To test the algorithm, we introduce Gaussian anomalies in the Thomsen paramete… Show more

“…We define R P s , R SV s , and R SH s as source radiation patterns of incident P-, SV-and SH-waves from the seismic source f s . The six terms R P−P m;Q , R P−SV m;Q , R P−SH m;Q , R SV−SV m;Q , R SV−SH m;Q , and R SH−SH m;Q indicate parameter radiation patterns in different parameterizations (Q) recently considered (Gholami et al, 2013a;Operto et al, 2013;Alkhalifah and Plessix, 2014;Kamath and Tsvankin, 2016;Oh and Alkhalifah, 2016). In this study, we ignore R The schematic diagrams illustrating the mechanism of the total radiation response R Total and the definition of the angles that are used throughout the paper: for incident (a) P-wave and (b) S-wave.…”

“…Raknes & Arntsen 2014;Ovcharenko et al 2018). Since elastic anisotropic waveform inversions have higher computational costs to their isotropic counterparts, they only recently became the focus of attention (Köhn et al 2015;Podgornova et al 2015;Owusu et al 2016;Bergslid et al 2015;Oh & Alkhalifah 2016;Kamath & Tsvankin 2016). Feasibility and resolution studies for 3-D inversions are still computationally expensive, therefore they are often performed either in 2-D (Podgornova et al 2015) or with very few simultaneous (encoded) shots (Köhn et al 2015).…”
