Electric Power Generation from Earth’s Rotation through its Own Magnetic Field

Abstract: We examine electric power generation from Earth's rotation through its own non-rotating magnetic field (that component of the field symmetric about Earth's rotation axis). There is a simple general proof that this is impossible. However, we identify a loophole in that proof and show that voltage could be continuously generated in a low-magnetic-Reynolds number conductor rotating with Earth, provided magnetically permeable material were used to ensure curl(v × B 0) = 0 within the conductor, where B 0 derives fr… Show more

“…(1) always. However, this argument fails when ∇ × (v × B) = 0 (Chyba & Hand (2016, 2020), because the electric field of a static charge distribution may always be written as a potential of a scalar field: E = −∇V . But since ∇ × ∇V = 0 always, the equation…”

“…Recently, Chyba and Hand made a proposal for obtaining electrical energy through electromagnetic induction in a circuit at rest on the Earth surface [89]. The circuit, viewed from an inertial frame K centered at the Earth's center, is rotating in the Earth's magnetic field.…”
