Electric propulsion: comparisons between different concepts

Abstract: Electric propulsion (EP) is nowadays a mature technology used on board space vehicles. In comparison with chemical thrusters, electric thrusters can advantageously accelerate propellant at a high exhaust speed. The corresponding propellant mass saving makes essential the utilization of electric thrusters for low thrust and long duration missions. Different types of EP devices have been developed for covering a large variety of maneuvers and mission requirements. To date, EP appears as a solid candidate for fut… Show more

“…The success of electric propulsion utilization is based on the ability to eject a high-speed propellant and mass economy induced at launch to realize such missions. For a large overview and state-of-art of the electric propulsion topic, the reader can refer to textbooks of Jahn (2006), Turner (2009), Goebel and Katz (2008), to review articles of Ahedo (2011), Garrigues and Coche (2011), Mazouffre (2016), Levchenko et al (2018), and to recent special issues of IEEE Transactions on Plasma Sciences, vol. 43(1) (2015) and Plasma Sources Science and Technology, vol.…”

“…Many reviews have been written on the physics of the various propulsion systems and their respective advantages. 1,2,3 Electrostatic thrusters, such as Hall thrusters and Gridded thrusters, work on the principle of accelerating positive ions to provide moderate thrust and high specific impulse. The ion beam current and space charge need to be compensated by electrons in the downstream space to avoid charging of the satellite and cancellation of the acceleration field.…”
