Electrical conductivity variations around the Palmdale Section of the San Andreas Fault Zone

Abstract: Our analysis of a decade of observations from the Palmdale California telluric array is presented. The array is a system of large‐scale telluric field measurements used for the passive monitoring of electrical conductivity variations over a large region centered over the San Andreas Fault Zone northeast of Los Angeles. Since 1985, systematic changes in the relationships between the telluric field measurements around the array have been observed. These changes amounted to 1% to 2% by the time the array was clos… Show more

“…Several observations on the San Andreas Fault have given evidence for such changes (e.g. Mazella et al, 1974;Madden et al, 1993), while other monitoring efforts have given negative results. A very careful MT survey will be needed to reliably detect the subtle changes associated with fluid flow during the earthquake cycle.…”

“…The result was at first puzzling because the correlation was negative in some cases (49,53,59) and positive in other cases (10,58). To resolve this puzzle, Jin and Aki (10) between a large increase in coda Q-1 in southern California during 1986 and 1987 (10,44) and the increase in electrical conductivity in the same region (60) 4-5, which increased the stress in the brittle part of the crust.…”

“…Geophys. manuscript No.In this paper, we consider MT studies at the SAF near Hollister and Carrizo The SAF has also been a target for telluric (Madden et al 1993;Park et al 2007) and magnetotelluric monitoring (e.g. Kappler et al 2010).…”
