Electricity from the Silk Cocoon Membrane

Abstract: Silk cocoon membrane (SCM) is an insect engineered structure. We studied the electrical properties of mulberry (Bombyx mori) and non-mulberry (Tussar, Antheraea mylitta) SCM. When dry, SCM behaves like an insulator. On absorbing moisture, it generates electrical current, which is modulated by temperature. The current flowing across the SCM is possibly ionic and protonic in nature. We exploited the electrical properties of SCM to develop simple energy harvesting devices, which could operate low power electronic… Show more

“…The elemental composition of coated and uncoated silk fiber is presented in Figure and Table . Silk fibroin fibers display the typical distribution of major elements present in other silks with calcium, oxygen, chlorine, nitrogen, and sodium being the most abundant . In contrast, the presence of carbon, oxygen, chloride, and iron was observed for pure PPY samples (Figure b), which is in good agreement with the structure of this polymer and its method of synthesis, as iron doping is expected to occur.…”

“…141 Fully understanding, and emulating, these attributes remains an ongoing pursuit, as research continues to reveal the novel, potentially useful, properties of natural silks beyond their well-known mechanical performance. 142 In the quest of a spider-like silk fiber, it is important to note that reproducing the precise mechanical properties of native spider silk may not necessarily be useful. First, spider silk has evolved as a single-use material, which is perhaps its greatest weakness as a commercial fiber.…”

“…Bombyx mori ) with several unique properties, which have been recognized as making it a suitable choice for high performance advanced devices such as memory devices, bio‐flexible devices and optical devices . In this context, natural silk fibroin (NSF) is known as a flourishing bio‐protein material which has revealed outstanding properties for bio‐integrated electronic, biomedical, energy and flexible electronic device applications . Usually, NSF is extracted from the naturally available cocoon of the Bombyx mori silkworm.…”
