Electrification of Vessels for Garbage Collection and Treatment in Venice Lagoon

Abstract: Nowadays, reducing pollutant emissions is of fundamental importance. In particular, in areas where urban public transport is carried out almost exclusively by boats, these represent the primary factors on which it is necessary to intervene. The conversion of current diesel units into hybridpropelled ones is essential to preserve the marina and the environment in areas considered UNESCO heritage sites such as Venice. This document concerns the study of the first hybrid vessel built for garbage collection in the… Show more

“…While the focus so far has been on land transport, in recent years several studies have been working toward the electrification of water transport [7][8][9][10]. Although most emissions come from large ships crossing oceans to transport goods, smaller vehicles crossing the lagoons of large European cities also have a significant impact [11,12]. Water pollution caused by small vessels risks damaging not only the surrounding natural environment, but also the beauty of UNESCO sites, as in the case of Venice.…”

“…According to the reports of the International Energy Agency (IEA), despite the destabilization of global energy consumption due to the pandemic, electricity demand will reach pre-pandemic levels in 2022, and continue to increase [ 1 ]. Analogous to the increase in demand on land, the demand for electricity on board ships will also increase, due to the ongoing electrification of ships and a growing number of electricity-based technologies [ 2 , 3 , 4 ], the implementation of which contributes to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 [ 5 ] while increasing energy efficiency. Consequently, the increasing demand requires improvements in two areas: power generation and power distribution.…”
