“…Case reports in the literature of ACD to ECG electrode dots have implicated several allergens, including propylene glycol, p ‐ tert ‐butylphenol formaldehyde resin, colophonium, para phenylenediamine and preservatives such as tragacanth gum and parachlorometaxylenol . The only other case report identifying acrylates as the allergen responsible for contact dermatitis to ECG electrode dots was published in 2001, and in that study the patient reacted to hydroxyethyl acrylate 0.1% pet.…”

“…We could not perform chemical analysis of the BIS electrodes, but because the manufacturer stated that the possibility of contamination by these substances during manufacturing is not zero, they cannot be dismissed as possible causes (personal communication with the manufacturer). To date, there have been several reports of allergic reactions to ECG electrodes, and the causative substances included PTBP-F-R [ 2 ], propylene glycol [ 4 , 5 ], acrylates [ 6 , 7 ], para-chloro-meta-xylenol [ 8 ], and gum tragacanth [ 9 ]. It is not surprising that similar events of dermatitis may occur if these substances are present in the BIS sensor.…”

“…The reported contact allergens in a self‐adhesive ECG electrode are propylene glycol ( ), gum tragacanth , p ‐tert‐butylphenol formaldehyde resin , parachlorometaxylenol ( ) and acrylates ( ) in the gel part, nickel in the metal part, and p ‐tert‐butylphenol formaldehyde resin or acrylates ( ) in the adhesive part of the foam. The responsible acrylates were tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate, 1,4‐butanediol dimethacrylate , ethyl acrylate, hydroxyethyl acrylate, urethane diacrylate (aliphatic) and butanediol diacrylate in the reported cases.…”
