Electrochemical DNA biosensor based on gold nanorods for detecting hepatitis B virus

Abstract: The purpose of this work was to fabricate an electrochemical DNA biosensor for detecting hepatitis B virus. Gold nanorods (GNRs), which are known for their conductivity, were used to increase surface area and consequently increase the immobilization of single-stranded DNA (ss-DNA) on the modified gold electrode. The GNRs were characterized via transmission electron microscopy. The morphology of the gold electrode before and after modification with GNRs was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Atomic-… Show more

“…These CHIT‐CNF modified electodes presented some important advantages such as, being cost‐effective, easy‐to use, and not requiring any time consuming modification step, or any sophisticated instruments with a special training. Consequently, it is indicating that the CHIT‐CNF matrix can be used as a selective and sensitive platform for monitoring of indicator‐free DNA hybridization without using any external electroactive indicators, such as methylene blue , or daunomycin , ferrocenecarboxylic acid , [Co(phen) 3 ] 3+ . This advanced biosensor technology can be further used in the application of detection of genetic, or inherited diseases based on PCR samples, and monitoring of protein, toxins, drugs.…”

“…The sequence of oligonucleotides was selected using basic local alignment search tool (BLAST) to have the least similarity to the human serum genome. To select these types of the DNA oligonucleotides, their spatial symmetry and thermodynamical aspects, which prevents them from screwing or bending when immobilized to the surface, were significant parameters, [18].…”

“…Several nanostructured materials have been explored for the biomedical applications. The most commonly studied materials are based on carbon, silica, and metals in different shapes (i.e., spheres, tubes, and rods) (Adabi et al 2011, Ketabchi et al 2016, Shakoori et al 2015, Tavakol et al 2014. The toxicity and biocompatibility of these materials depends on several factors such as the size, surface area, functional groups, concentration, and dosage (Foldvari and Bagonluri 2008).…”
