Electrochemiluminescence Sensor Having a Pt Electrode Coated with a Ru(bpy)32+-Modified Chitosan/Silica Gel Membrane

Abstract: A sensor based on the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of the Ru(bpy) 3 2+ complex is attractive in analytical chemistry because of its high substrate selectivity and high sensitivity. 1 -4 It is desired that the ECL sensor has a higher selectivity compared to ECL-based flow-through detectors for HPLC which have been reported by many reseachers. 5 We have prepared an ECL-optic oxalic acid sensor having a Pt electrode coated with chitosan to which Ru(bpy) 3 2+ complex moieties are covalently bonded. 6 The oxalic… Show more

“…9 Another powerful approach is the immobilization of Ru(bpy)3 2+ in sol-gel silica SiO2/organic polymer composite modified electrode. [16][17][18][19][20] The ECL sensor based on the silica/ organic composite films exhibited greatly enhanced sensitivity and stability compared to pure Nafion-based ECL sensor. 17 However, the brittle character of the sol-gel silica limited their practical applications.…”

“…This method is not ideal, however, because Ru(bpy) 3 2+ diffuses out of the matrix upon oxidation, leading to a continual decrease in the luminescence. More viable approaches for the entrapment of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ involve overcoating procedures or polymer-silica composites (27,28).…”

“…A silica sol is then cast on top of the chitosan-coated electrode and dried (27). Another method involves preparing Nafion-silica composite films on glassy carbon electrodes (28).…”

“…Most probably, efforts would be pursued in designing new systems for the immobilization of biomolecules and electron transfer cofactors in order to get improved biosensors, the ceramic-carbon and screen-printed electrodes being the spearheads of such investigations. Finally, recent works on photoinduced electron transfer [307], spectroelectrochemical detectors [308], and electrochemiluminescence sensors [309] could open new scopes in combining silica-based materials with electroanalytical science.…”
