Electromagnetic, complex image model of a large area RF resonant antenna as inductive plasma source

Abstract: A large area antenna generates a plasma by both inductive and capacitive coupling; it is an electromagnetically coupled plasma source. In this work, experiments on a large area planar RF antenna source are interpreted in terms of a multi-conductor transmission line coupled to the plasma. This electromagnetic treatment includes mutual inductive coupling using the complex image method, and capacitive matrix coupling between all elements of the resonant network and the plasma. The model reproduces antenna input i… Show more

“…The preceding amplitude factor is the same as in equation (16). The corresponding total formula for the power deposition per unit area is then identical to the result obtained by Lieberman [3] for the classical stochastic heating in ICPs except for a factor 3/8.…”

“…The results obtained in this work might be applied not only to the INCA discharge but also to other cases in the literature. Recently another large area discharge based on inductive coupling has been introduced by Hollenstein et al [15,16]. This source consists of a larger number of linear rods either in a plane or in a circular arrangement.…”

“…Also some concepts using multiple antennas have been proposed. One of the more recent developments is to replace the coils by linear rods [5][6][7] . Apparently, this allows for easy up scaling.…”

“…A solution is to depart from the standard concept that uses a flat spiral coil. One possibility is to utilize a network of evenly spaced rods [4][5][6][7]. The parameters of the network are adjusted to be in resonance with the driving frequency.…”
