Electromagnetic Structure Resonances in Inhomogeneous Plasma Layers

Abstract: PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2 JANUARY 1978 etry yields a value l(1/n)/(dn/dz) I ' =L = 2+ 1 mm at r=0. It may be shown that a,t resonance 9 T~96k~2 T2 4', c' 2 k, m, c' ' ing this work. This work was supported by the U. S. Energy Research and Development Administration, Contract No. E Y/76-C-02-3073. and that at any position (&~)' = to~, '+36k'T, /m,. (The other sideband has~' =e, +«u.) From Eq. (4) it can be shown that if we depart a. distance « from resonance, the plasma wave detected at this &~is at resonance a… Show more

“…In contrast to this, Honig [59] measured emission currents of 100 A, which was in contradiction to any knowledge of space charge restrictions (Child-Langmuir law). [79]. It is now evi, dent that a special mechanism takes over above powers of around 1 to 10 MW.…”

“…If a uniform spherical laser irradiation (obviously with a low degree of hot spots) on a pellet is achieved, the conversion of 50% of the laser energy into non-thermal ions of 60 keV energy (Slater 1977;Mayer et al 1978) cannot be electrostatic only (because of the over-large number of ions) but could, without self-focusing, be generated by nonlinear forces on the spherical surface. Other processes, such as Denisov's resonance absorption (Hora 1981), need oblique laser incidence and a polarization dependence which was not observed in the case of the pellets by Slater (1977) and Mayer et al (1978). The action of instabilities can be expected not to be dominant for the transfer of laser energy as shown by Chen et al (1979).…”

“…[1 -3] their soliton character is treated, in Refs. [4] and [5] the resonance properties of density modifications are stressed. They all have in common that no essential flow of the plasma has been taken into account.…”
