With the recent advent of research focusing on the body’s significance in music, the integration of physiological sensors in the context of empirical methodologies for music has also gained momentum. Given the recognition of covert muscular activity as a strong indicator of musical intentionality and the previously ascertained link between physical effort and various musical aspects, electromyography (EMG)—signals representing muscle activity—has also experienced a noticeable surge. While EMG technologies appear to hold good promise for sensing, capturing, and interpreting the dynamic properties of movement in music, which are considered innately linked to artistic expressive power, they also come with certain challenges, misconceptions, and predispositions. The paper engages in a critical examination regarding the utilisation of muscle force values from EMG sensors as indicators of physical effort and musical activity, particularly focusing on (the intuitively expected link to) sound levels. For this, it resides upon empirical work, namely practical insights drawn from a case study of music performance (Persian instrumental music) in the context of a music class. The findings indicate that muscle force can be explained by a small set of (six) statistically significant acoustic and movement features, the latter captured by a state-of-the-art (full-body inertial) motion capture system. However, no straightforward link to sound levels is evident.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, sağlıklı kişilerin ve hastaların robotik yürüyüş sırasında alt ekstremite kas aktivitelerini kinesiyoloji analizi kullanarak incelemektir. Başlangıçta spinal cord injury (SCI) ve inme hastaları gibi 6 paraplejik hastadan, 2 hemiplejik hastadan ve 4 sağlıklı kişiden kas sinyalleri alındı. Ardından, filtreleme, doğrultma, Ortalama Karekök (RMS) gibi sinyal işleme teknikleri kullanılarak ve ayrıca Maksimum Gönüllü Kasılma (MVC) hesaplanarak sinyaller analiz edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak hemiplejik hastalarda Gluteus Maximus (GMA), Gluteus Medius (GM) ve Iliopsoas (ILP) gibi kalça kaslarının MVC değerlerinin SCI hastalarına ve sağlıklı kişilere göre daha düşük olduğu görüldü. Ayrıca elde edilen sinyaller analiz edildiğinde Medial Gastrocnemius (MG) kasının aktivitesinin hareket yolunun ve hareket niyetinin belirlenmesinde kullanılabileceği bulundu. Ayrıca, yürüyüş hareketinin EMG sonuçları, epidural stimülasyon (ES) tedavisinde doğru genlik ve frekans stimülasyonunun uygulanmasında yardımcı olabilir.

Elastic kirigami patch for electromyographic analysis of the palm muscle during baseball pitching

Surface electromyography (sEMG) is widely used to analyze human movements, including athletic performance. For baseball pitchers, a very precise movement is required to pitch the ball into the strike zone. The palm muscles appear to play a key role in this movement, and a real-time recording of sEMG from the palm muscle is useful in the analysis of motion during baseball pitching. However, the currently available devices with rigid and bulky electrodes (including connective wires) impede natural movements of the wearer and recording of sEMG from the palm muscles during vigorous action. Here, we describe a skin-contact patch consisting of kirigami-based stretchable wirings and conductive polymer nanosheet-based ultraconformable bioelectrodes, which address the challenge of mechanical mismatch between human skin and electrical devices. The key strategy is a kirigami-inspired wiring design and a mechanical gradient structure from nanosheet-based flexible bioelectrodes to a bulk wearable device. This approach would buffer the mechanical stress applied to the skin-contact bioelectrodes during an arm swing movement. With this patch, we precisely measure sEMG at the abductor pollicis brevis muscle (APBM) in a baseball player during ball pitching. We observe differences in the activity of the APBM between different types of pitches-fastball and curveball. This sEMG measurement system will enable the analysis of motion in unexplored muscle areas, such as on the palm and the sole, leading to a deeper understanding of muscular activity during performance in a wide range of sports and other movements.
