Digestive systems and extracellular digestion are key animal features, but their emergence during early animal evolution is currently poorly understood. As the last common ancestor of non-bilaterian animal groups (sponges, ctenophores, placozoans and cnidarians) dates back to the beginning of animal life, their study and comparison provides important insights into the early evolution of digestive systems and functions. Here, I have compiled an overview of the development and cell biology of digestive tissues in non-bilaterian animals. I will highlight the fundamental differences between extracellular and intracellular digestive processes, and how these are distributed among animals. Cnidarians (e.g. sea anemones, corals, jellyfish), the phylogenetic outgroup of bilaterians (e.g. vertebrates, flies, annelids), occupy a key position to reconstruct the evolution of bilaterian gut evolution. A major focus will therefore lie on the development and cell biology of digestive tissues in cnidarians, especially sea anemones, and how they compare to bilaterian gut tissues. In that context, I will also review how a recent study on the gastrula fate map of the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis challenges our long-standing conceptions on the evolution of cnidarian and bilaterian germ layers and guts.

In the USA, sea urchin aquaculture is in its infancy. One concern with current captive culture involves maintaining roe, or "uni," quality. Diet of cultured urchins has been shown to affect roe quality. Sea urchins have a unique digestive system and lack certain digestive enzymes, yet they are able to digest high percentages of food biomass consumed. It is hypothesized that their highly efficient digestion is because of the presence of bacteria in the gut. This study determined bacterial profiles in guts of captiveraised sea urchins, Lytechinus variegatus, by analyzing DNA extracted from the urchins. Using a bacteria-specific forward and universal reverse primer, 16s rDNA genes were amplified using L. variegatus gut DNA samples and subsequently cloned. Recombinant colonies containing putative 16S rDNA were randomly selected for sequencing. Sequences generated from these clones were analyzed and compared with published bacterial 16S rDNA sequences available through the National Center for Biotechnology Information database. Sequence data analysis suggested that the captive-raised sea urchins contained a limited number of representative genera. The genera most commonly identified included Pseudomonads, Vibrio, and various epsilon and gamma proteobacterium species.

Three species of umagillid turbellarians were found to have different nutritional relationships with their echinoid hosts: Syndisyrinxfranciscanus ingests host intestinal tissue and ciliates that are symbiotic in the intestine of the host; Syndesmis dendrastrorum consumes intestinal tissue and materials that have been ingested by the host; an umagillid that closely resembles Syndesmis echinorum subsists entirely on host intestinal tissue.
