“…It can be assumed that during morphogenesis of the squamate pancreas, they become dynamic (Baum & Georgiou, ; Takeichi, ) and allow the cells' shape and even their location to change (Lecuit, ). The structure of junctional complexes during pancreas differentiation in grass snake is similar those of all other vertebrate species, both in embryos (Pan & Wright, ; Pictet & Rutter, ; Wessells & Evans, ) and adults (Farquhar & Palade, ; Friend & Gilula, ; Kojima et al, ; Mutoh, Wakuri, Liu, Seno, & Taniguchi, ; Vogelbein & Fournie, ). Therefore, it can be assumed that the function of cellular connections between cells forming the pancreatic ducts of the grass snake is the same as in other vertebrates.…”

“…Several papers have suggested that folliculo-stellate cells may be involved in phagocytosis, support, contraction, stem cell function, and paracrine regulation of hormone secretion. Mutoh et aL (1998) found that intercalated duct cells darkened and increased lysosomes in number and size in the cytoplasm after tolbutamide treatment, as they support to endocrine islet cells. The intercalated duct cells of the pancreas which penetrate through the islets, may perform functions similar to those of folliculo-stellate cells in relation to islet endocrine cells.…”

“…Earlier work on chick pancreas (Mutoh et al, 1997(Mutoh et al, , 1998(Mutoh et al, , 1999 clearly indicated presence of the stellate cells in chick A and B islets as a part of intercalated duct cells, probably excluding the possibility of epithelial mesenchymal transition, which needs to be verified.…”

“…Electron microscopic studies of these cells have suggested their role in protecting islets against alloxan insults (Mutoh et al, 1997(Mutoh et al, , 1998 and their importance in protecting the islet endocrine cells against the diabetogenic insults in chicken. A possible role in phagocytosis, support, contraction, stem cell function, and paracrine regulation of hormone secretion has also been suggested (Mutoh et al, 1999).…”
