Electron microscopic study of signet-ring cells in diffuse carcinoma of the human stomach

Abstract: The signet-ring cells seen in gastric carcinoma of the diffuse type were studied by light and electron microscopy. A classification of these cells into Types A, B and C was developed, based on intracellular mucous granules, nuclei and organelles, and be reactions to PAS and Alcian-blue staining. The gradual transition of type A cells to Type B and the subsequent change of Type B to Type C suggest successive stages in maturation. These cells, especially those of Type B, resemble the mucous neck cells of the cor… Show more

“…This finding is also consistent with a recent report that ANXA10 is downregulated in esophageal adenocarcinoma compared with Barrett's esophagus, 51 in which the esophageal mucosa is replaced by gastric mucosa. Our findings support the concept of two distinct histogenetic pathways of GC 47–49 . We suggest that ANXA10 can serve as a marker of a subset of GC, in particular, DGC, and its loss correlates with the deviation of tumor cells from gastric differentiation.…”

“…It showed a rate of lymph node metastasis similar to or higher than other types of gastric carcinoma [7,9], unlike advanced cancer, early gastric carcinoma with SRC has a significantly lower lymph node metastasis rate than other histology [11].…”

“…Advanced gastric carcinoma with SRC is characterized by the potential to infiltrate the gastric wall diffusely, and a higher rate of peritoneal dissemination than non-SRC [9,10]. It showed a rate of lymph node metastasis similar to or higher than other types of gastric carcinoma [7,9], unlike advanced cancer, early gastric carcinoma with SRC has a significantly lower lymph node metastasis rate than other histology [11].…”

“…SRCC is usually presented with infiltration of the gastric wall diffusely. It also has a tendency for more extensive and infiltrative growth, lymph node and distant metastasis including peritoneal dissemination [9,10]. It is usually classified as poorly-differentiated tumor. It is most commonly located in antral region.…”
