Electronically Type-Sorted Carbon Nanotube-Based Electrochemical Biosensors with Glucose Oxidase and Dehydrogenase

Abstract: An electrochemical enzyme biosensor with electronically type-sorted (metallic and semiconducting) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) for use in aqueous media is presented. This research investigates how the electronic types of SWNTs influence the amperometric response of enzyme biosensors. To conduct a clear evaluation, a simple layer-by-layer process based on a plasma-polymerized nano thin film (PPF) was adopted because a PPF is an inactive matrix that can form a well-defined nanostructure composed of SWN… Show more

“…Muguruma et al designed a LBL assembled glucose sensor using either metallic (mSWCNT) or semi-conducting (sSWCNT) CNTs that were drop cast onto a plasma polymerized acetonitrile film (PPF) with enzyme. [104] Using sorted SWCNTs, they determined the mechanism of the reaction was that CNTs facilitated direct electron transfer at GOx/sSWCNT sensors. Furthermore, they also developed a glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) based sensor, where sSWCNTs were more sensitive and less resistive.…”

“…A preliminary investigation was performed to determine the effect of the SWCNT electronic type on the amperometric characteristics of a biosensor with NAD-dependent GDH. (9) The sensing mechanism involves a signal peak produced by NADH oxidation caused by the enzymatic reaction:…”

“…Recently, enzyme labels, such as alkaline phosphatase (AP), horseradish peroxidase (HRP), glucose oxidase and β-galactosidase, have been widely used in many biochemical immunoassay [13][14][15][16]. Particularly, the cost of HRP is much lower than other enzyme labels, thus, HRP-labeled antibody has been commercially accepted to be a detector for bioassay.…”
