Electrophoretic pattern of seed proteins in Trifolium L. and its taxonomic implications

Abstract: The taxonomic delimitations of 61 taxa of the genus Trifolium L. belonging to presently accepted five sections, namely Lotoidea, Mistyllus, Vesicaria, Chronosemium and Trifolium are evaluated, based on numerical analysis of their electrophoretic seed protein profiles. The dendrogram, resulted from the hierarchical cluster analysis of SDS-PAGE profiles of seed proteins conform, with some restrictions, to the present splitting of the genus Trifolium into the sections but not into the subsections and series.

“…In the studies by George et al (2013) on the seeds of 61 taxa belonging to the sections Trifolium, Lotoidea Crantz, Mistyllus (C. Presl) Godr, Vesicaria Crantz, and Chronosemium Ser., the CA results of SDS PAGE profiles, with some restrictions, supported the sectional classification of Zohary and Heller (1984). Watson et al (2000) carried out a phylogenetic classification of the Trifolium taxa in Asia, Europe, and Africa.…”

“…In this area, it is represented by over 150 species, the richest country being Turkey (over 100 species), the poorest Egypt (22 species) (Euro+Med 2006 onwards). Italy holds 72 species (Conti et al 2005) and 7 out of 8 sections that are typically recognized in the infrageneric classification of the genus Trifolium based on morphology (Zohary and Heller 1984, Greuter et al 1989, Coulot and Rabaute 2013, George et al 2013. Clovers are widely grown as green manure crops, pasture, livestock forage or silage; crop species have become extensively naturalized and are becoming increasingly widespread.…”

“…Morphology of seeds of many mimosoid taxa has been treated variously in many studies among them: Manning & Van Staden (1987), Al-Gohary & Mohamed (2007) and Karakish et al (2013). Electrophoresis has become an additional tool applied in resolving taxonomic and phylogenetic problems (George et al, 2013 andBurghardt &Espert, 2007). Most applications of electrophoretic techniques in plant classifications use gel medium supports.…”
